With simply phrased riddle rhymes Schrager draws children's minds into thinking about the answer to "what state is it?" in his book called "A Knife and a Fork and a Bottle and a Cork." I appreciate that the answers are not just given away and children who already know the names of the 50 states in the Union will be challenged to decipher just which one is being alluded to in the riddle rhymes in this book. This book is definitely for kids and parents who are not afraid to think outside the standard educational box.
Presented with a rhyming sentence and a black and white line drawing the reader must draw upon other parts of their brain to figure out the answers. Reading each puzzle out loud is the key to answers and I think this book presents a great exercise for kids and adults alike.
The line drawings paired with the puzzles are delicate and whimsical and deserve extra study while reading. The manner in which the puzzles come to life in the drawings is thought provoking. I would have enjoyed a touch of a single color in each of the black and white drawings just to accent one or two features in the lovely artwork.
I took this book out with our four boys (9, 8, 6 and 6) while they played at the sandpile at my house. I read the riddles to them while they played. While they did not see the pictures they still had their little wheels turning and would stop and stand up to think about the words and try guessing the states. The cleverest of them got the majority right. I almost want them to do the "test" individually so they get a chance to figure it out without the competition. (I may just implement that plan for the future.) But they eagerly wanted to hear the next one to try their best. Fun stuff!
I highly recommend this book for home and school libraries for kids who are learning or have already learned the names of the 50 states in the USA. Definitely a book to challenge and expand thinking (which every kid needs!) ~ Julia King
